Happy 15 Months Addison Joy

We remain amazed at all Addison learns and accomplishes every single day. Little ones learn so quickly and change just as quickly!!! We LOVE this age so far. There are of course some challenges that come with this age, but the giggles, grins, discoveries and developments seem to overshadow any challenges.

The Stats:
  • Weight: Just bareley under 23 lbs (50th percentile)
  • Height: 32.25 inches, WOW (94th percentile)
  • Head: 18ish (91st percentile)
  • Overall: She remains right on track with her expected growth and the doctor could not believe how many words she could say as well as how many teeth she has. Her iron level is up in the normal range so all our attention to filling her with iron rich foods (lentils, red meat, spinach, peas, broccoli, etc.) has paid off. With my history of low iron, we we warned to continue to be just as vigilent with offering iron rich foods.

What else is new?
  • Walking: 100% walking now. Since she can walk, we encourage her to walk everywhere (except to and from the car) rather than carrying her a lot. When we have Manna I will not be able to carry her as much, so we want to train the right habits now.
  • Talking: I find her verbal ability shocking!! 2 word sentences are becoming more common already and she can say upwards of 50-60 words. The AAP says to expect 5-10 jargon/babble words at this age, so we are very pleased with her development. I am sure you can imagine where she gets her talkative nature from. "Talks Excessively" is a report we will likely receive from her teachers, just like her mommy (sorry mia and papa, I am sure that was annoying when I was a kid, but it could be worse things right?).
  • Eating: She drinks 16-20 oz of milk a day if I had to guess. She eats just about anything you offer her. Generally we all eat the same meal as a family for dinner and she LOVES to eat whatever we eat. High chair manners have been a bit of a challenge lately as she is experimenting with textures and the cause and effect nature of her foods. We are working to keep this under control, however I seem to be frustrated sometimes!!! Addison still prefers flavor packed foods over bland foods (i.e. steamed veggies with herbs vs anything canned). With the large amounts she eats, I frequently wonder where all the food goes because she is so long and lean. Many of her peers eat far less but yet are chunky---they are much shorter though. Who knows!! She is just her daddy through and through, which I am thankful for. I hope that she has the kind of metabolism he does, what a blessing for a girl!!!
  • Paci: Addison only has her paci for sleep times and structured independent playtime (when she is in the play pen alone for 30 min playing) and oddly she only liked the paci after I quit nursing at 12 months. After much debate, we decided to allow the paci at sleep times until well after the baby is born. In fact, the doctor actually RECOMMENDED it. She said there will be so many other changes going on, this would be the ideal comfort thing to keep in place. Interesting. So we will worry about dropping the paci when she is old enough to understand and after she has fully adjusted to her new role as a big sister. We all pick our battles :)
  • Personality: Addison is still a little analyzer/observer; very few things are an accident. Which actually makes keeping an eye on her admittedly much easier. She is a rule follower by nature (one of the few things she gets from me) so when she does disobey she is more embarrassed than anything else. She is starting to become a little comedian for Matthew, myself and others she is around frequently. Naughtiness tends to be more frequent these days, but she takes correction relatively well and usually recovers from the "drama" quickly. She is just as sweet and obedient as she can be 95% of the time. We have determined 12 months to this age has been our favorite thus far. She is still on the shy side with new people overall and I think that will probably remain for quite a while.
  • Blanket Time: We are still working diligently in this area. She has blanket time for 10 minutes about 3 times a week. Interestingly, the other day she was having free play time in the living room and was growing quite grumpy. Puzzled, I decided to try blanket time a bit early that day. She was pleased as punch when I set down the blanket and created a boundary. Conclusion? She was feeling overwhelmed by the freedom and needed a boundary to harness her attention/energy. Eventually I would like to get blanket time up to 15-30 minutes maybe. Eventually this time will turn into room time.
  • Independent Play: She has 30 minutes of independent play in the play pen, 30 minutes every morning after breakfast. As soon as she finishes eating she signs AND says "play" and "music" to indicate she is ready for IP (we play a selection of classical music during this time). I believe she really enjoys this time.
  • Discipline: Ug, I hate this area but Matthew frequently reminds me to think big picture and remember that we are parents, not friends with our kids right now. It would be much easier to ignore this area of her life now, but it would make the future so much more difficult. Addison deserves parents. And boy can it be hard. Our hierarchy of discipline is something like this: 1) verbal warning 2) verbal warning again 3) pop hand 4) pop thigh and 5) remove from situation. We will be adding time out and/or isolation in the future but for now this works fine.
  • Socialization: I am so surprised that Addison has already moved past parallel play. She actively plays WITH other children. I really started to notice the difference when we started attending a weekly playgroup and spending time with her neighbor friend (Elle, who is a year older than Addison).
I am going to wait to take a photo with her teddy bear until 18 months, so stay tuned!!!!

Practicing Big Sisterhood (and Mommy of Two-hood)

Last Saturday night at church, I kept the 2 years and younger nursery (Saturday night services have a much smaller crowd than Sundays). There were two 2 year olds (both boys), Addison and a 12 week old. The 12 week old happens to be a friend of mine's little boy.

Addison did great playing with the two older boys and was so patient with the lil non share-er we had. One of the boys took away EVERY toy Addison even came near. She would just look at the little boy sometimes grumble a bit and then move on. I do not mind if another kid does not share with Addison and I rarely get involved because she needs to learn to sort out her differences on her own. Not to mention, SHE needs to learn to share. OF COURSE, I get involved when things get physical or start getting out of hand. So right off the bat I was already proud. No tears with all the toy sharing.

Addison loves other small babies. She always tries to give them her cup of milk or share with them but I was truly anxious to see how Addison would react when I needed to HOLD the younger baby. I braced myself for a melt down. To my surprise, she just wanted to watch. She never tried to get in my lap, she never got upset...just watched. I could not believe it! I realize this was ONE TIME and having Manna will be everyday, but it is step in the right direction. That is all I care about.

And next...practice for mommy!! Addison and my friends infant were the last two in the nursery after service. Since I know her, I decided to bring her son to her from the nursery to the sanctuary. Carrier in one hand, Addison's hand in the other, two bags and a purse on my shoulder, we headed down the hall!! We made it with no injuries, HOORAY! And remember, Addison JUST started walking so we are practicing walking holding my hand vs. carrying. Why even get used to being carried now that she can walk?

The way I figure it------ANY practice is good practice!!!

Stained Glass by Mia

Addison has the bestest, most creative, and talented Mia (my mother) ever!! Mia made a very special stained glass for Addison, check out the photo below. I cannot wait to see it in person and hang it up for all to admire. The colors will go perfectly with most any room too!

Mia: Thank you for your time and effort to make this for Addison. This will surely be something she treasures forever and it will be a wonderful way for us to tell her all about her sweet Mia!!

New Routine, The "Wise" Series Way

The wise series of books ("On Becoming Babywise" "On Becoming Babywise II", "On Becoming Toddlerwise", etc) all stress the importance of a routine so your child knows what to expect next ultimately building self-confidence, self-control and so much more that I cannot do it justice to list. Part of what the series encourages it to actual write out the routine, but know that you MUST be flexible. Flexibility is key because it gives you freedom AND teaches your child that THEY are not the center of the universe. In fact the series encourages you to break the routine, particularly to serve others (invite them over for dinner, do something for them at their home, etc.).

I say all of this to share Addison's new routine (in photos below). We do NOT live and die by this routine nor am I in any way saying THIS WAY is the BEST way. I tell everyone "do what is best for your family's unique situation" and for us, it is this and the wise series :) Our goal was to provide Addison a routine that provided her as many learning opportunities as possible inlcuding opportunities to learn independence and self-control. Many of you may think this is silly to write all this down in such pain staking detail, but I confess some days I just run out of constructive things for us to do. This routine helps me in those moments. And lastly, establishing a good daily schedule for Addison now will make adding Manna so much easier. I can look at the needs of BOTH and *hopefully* be better at accomplishing what everyone needs in a day. It's kinda like a lesson plan a teacher would make :)

We will be revising this when the morning nap is finally dropped and when school begins (September 13 I believe). The school routine will also incorporate several "versions" of Manna's routine but we will have to see exactly how Manna's routine plays out when he/she arrives.

Now everyone knows what I do all day long!!

Spaghetti Squash Manna at 22 Weeks!!

I say this every time I post but time is flying by; I cannot believe we are 22 weeks with baby #2 already!!! The pictures below are the closest comparison I have for now, I will take another one at 24 weeks for better comparison. Check out how low Manna is compared to Addison, WOW!

22 weeks, 1 Day with Lil Manna

24 weeks with Addison

Once Manna started to move where I can feel it, he/she hasn't stopped yet. There is literally very few moments (when I am actually sitting still) that Manna is not bouncing and kicking and flipping around. Manna better enjoy all the room and fluid while it can because if this one is anything like Addison, it will run out of room FAST and be BIG.

Here is a lil info on Manna:
At 11 inches (the length of a spaghetti squash) and almost 1 pound, your baby is starting to look like a miniature newborn. His lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and he's even developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums. His eyes have formed, but his irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment. If you could see inside your womb, you'd be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers his body and the deep wrinkles on his skin, which he'll sport until he adds a padding of fat to fill them in. Inside his belly, his pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.

How I am Feeling:
Overall, zero complaints. I love it!!!! I am occasionally a little tired but I think that is from Addison, not Manna :) I LOVE this part of the pregnancy...I LOVE feeling movement!

Prayers:
Father, please continue to grow this baby big, healthy and strong. Thank you again for this honor and privilege. Thank you for your blessings. Thank you for every little movement whether comfortable or not, we know each movement is the reassurance you bless us with that everything is going well!!!

Matthew's Birthday

Matthew's birthday was last week and although he does not like a big fuss over his birthday, I wanted to at least do something special :)

I made him a special dinner of shrimp alfredo with fresh salad, a personal sized cake and a tiny lil gift of an angry bird's shirt (he LOVES to play that app on his phone, kinda gift to be funny about). His real gift was clumped in with his anniversary gift--a guitar hanger for the wall and a new strap.

Happy Birthday to my love!! You are the bestest!!!

Nearly 21 Week Ultrasound and Doc Visit

Today all three of us were able to see our little Manna on TV!! AND we had our opportunity to find out gender....BUT...we resisted again...YAY!!!!!!! We cannot wait to meet Manna in October now!!!

My favorite part of the ultrasound portion was when the tech turned on the heat beat sound, LOUD, and Addison smiled and looked around for the sound. I would love to think she smiled because she knew it was her sibling, but I know she is clueless :)

Ultrasound Overall: Since we opted for no genetic testing and for a somewhat late anatomy ultrasound, they spent extra time checking things out and taking measurements. All praises to our heavenly father, everything appeared to be normal. The tech (and later on the doctor) said there was tons of fluid in there and Manna has plenty of room (mostly likely cause my pregnancies were close together)! My suspicions that this baby is LOW was also confirmed today!

Doctor Visit Overall: Very uneventful since we had just finished the ultrasound AND had no testing done. Just listened to the heartbeat (153) and chatted about delivery a bit. We discussed whether we would be encouraged to induce earlier this time since Addison was so big. The doctor said they would not encourage it any earlier unless there was a medical condition (high blood pressure or decreased fetal movement, etc.), but I should be prepared for a possibly larger baby in the 10 pound range. "Fine by me" I said!

I feel great so there was not much to talk about. We go back in a month (July 5). I love the monthly visits vs. the bi monthly visits at the end, BLAH.

Here are some pictures of our Lil Manna who is about the length of a banana now:

Spine!!

Look at that NOSE!!!

Hi Feet!!

This was about 20 weeks when Matthew and I went on a lil overnight trip to Dunleith in Natchez, MS where we got married. These are the same steps where we said "I do" a little over two years ago.
