Caleb Asher: 2 Months

Happy 2 months to our sweet Caleb Asher on December 27!

Stats

• Weight:  14 pounds 4.4 ounces (95%)
• Height:  24.5 inches tall  (93%)
• Head:  15.75 inches (51%)
• Diaper Size:  Size 2 (and maybe about to go to a size 3 at night!!)
• Clothing Size:  At least a 3-6 months in most brands and bigger in others
• Summary:  Healthy boy; got 2 shots :(  Looks like we have another Mini Matthew on our hands; and it is more than just the way Caleb looks; he is tall like Matthew too!

Developments

• Sleeping:  I am relieved, proud and thankful to report Caleb is sleeping through the night; he has been for about 2 weeks now!  After his 7:30 PM feeding, we rouse him to do a dreamfeed and then he sleeps until 7:30 AM.  So he does not wake up to eat at all---we feed him in his sleep for the dreamfeed.  His clock was stuck at 6 AM for a while so it did take a little work to get him to 7:30 but it is WORTH IT.  Naps are still a work in progress---he struggles with the 45 minute intruder off and on but 90% of the time he transitions through the intruder with only a minute of crying and then drifts back to sleep.
• Witching Hour:  (For more information on what the Witching Hour is, check out the Babywise Blog article on the Witching Hour)  Caleb definitely has the witching hour from about 6:20-7:15 pm.  It is truly the most bizarre phenomenon.  When he awakens from that evening nap his cry sounds completely different than any other cry he has any other time of the day/night.  He does not seem fully awake when he wakes up crying nor does he seem fully awake most of that hour.  Caleb doesn't cry the entire time.  Sometimes he is fussy the whole time, sometimes he is just happy being near the action without being IN the action.  Generally we leave him swaddle for the first 30 minutes of the witching hour then hold him, put him in the swing, put him in the bouncy seat and/or offer a paci.  We tried cluster feeding but he would have no part of eating before his 3 hour cycle.  By the time it is time for him to get ready for bed and have his final feeding at 7:30 am he is happy, ready to eat and ready to go to bed.  Another interesting note, if we go out to dinner or run errands around this time---he sleeps through the witching hour with no problems.  Weird.
• Eating:  Still breastfeeding but pumping and offering bottles a lot.  He takes a bottle MUCH slower than nursing, but the bottle allows me to help Addison and engage her while he is eating better than when I am nursing.  I breastfeed 2-3 times a day and bottles 3-4 times a day (total of 6 feedings a day).
• Routine:  
• 7:30-8:15 AM:  Wake up, Eat, Change Diaper
• 8:15-8:40 AM:  Wake time
• 8:40-10:30 AM:  Nap
• 10:30-11:15 AM:  Wake up, Eat, Change diaper
• 11:15-11:50 AM:  Wake time, play with Addison
• 11:50-1:30 PM:  Nap
• 1:30-2:15 PM:   Wake up, Eat, Change Diaper
• 2:15-3:00 PM: Wake time with Mommy alone
• 3:00-4:30 PM:  Nap
• 4:30-5:15 PM:  Wake up, Eat, Change Diaper
• 5:15-5:45:  Wake time
• 5:45-7:15:  Nap (The witching hour is in here so most of the time he wakes up and stays half awake until its bedtime)
• 7:15-7:40 PM:  Get ready for bed, sometimes bath  
• 7:40 PM:  Final feeding and then straight to bed
• 11:00 PM:  Dreamfeed
• Mobility:  Caleb has rolled from tummy to back several times but not everyday.  He tries to roll over from his back to his tummy, but he has a LONG way to go before he can do that.
• Verbal:  He is cooing more and more everyday.  He can say "oo" "ah-goo" "goo" and "ah".
• Personality:  Caleb seems pretty laid back and easy to please.  I think he likes to be around the hustle and bustle of Addison.  When Addison is around, all he wants to do is follow her voice...same with Matthew--he just wants to find Matthew when he is around.  Caleb grins and bats his eyes every time I say his name.  In fact, he loves to find any excuse to bat his eyes and flash his smile.  He is really a sweet dispositioned little boy. 

I admit there are some days I am about to pull my hair out with all the demands of two babies only 18 months apart---especially since it is a 24 hour a day 7 days a week job as a stay at home mom--but they really bring us such joy.  We are blessed to have two healthy, loving and sweet children.

What's in a Name?

What's in the name Caleb Asher?  Many people have asked me why we chose the name we did for our newest addition, especially his middle name--Asher.

CALEB

We new we wanted his first or last name to be biblical so we searched for a strong biblical name whether it be first or middle.  It's funny because we debated first names all the way up until the week we were induced and Caleb was never on the short list until we chose it just a few days before he was born.  Caleb is of Hebrew origin and the meaning of Caleb is "faith, devotion, whole hearted".Caleb, a companion of Moses and Joshua, was noted for his astute powers of observation and fearlessness in the face of overwhelming odds.  I love the last part---fearlessness in face of overwhelming odds; I hope Caleb lives up to his name and is fearless because of his faith in the Lord.  In fact, I feel like he was already fearless in the face of odds by proving the doctors wrong that he would be a tiny thing when he was born; he was 9 pounds 6.5 oz!!!

ASHER

While pregnant, we always give our babies a gender neutral nickname since we do not find out gender.  Addison was "blessing" and Caleb was "manna"; each had their own special meanings behind them.  When we stumbles on the name Asher, we immediately knew Asher must be the middle name because Asher means the same thing as Caleb's nickname.  Check out the meaning of his nickname Manna:  "Little Manna".  Asher means fortunate, happy and blessed; how true the meaning of his middle name!!  Babies are such a blessing and we are so fortunate to be blessed with two healthy children.  Admittedly, I do not always remember this when I am awake in the middle of the night with an upset baby or when someone is screaming for an unknown reason.  However, his name always reminds me of what a blessing my two babies truly are!

So there you have it.....the why behind Caleb Asher's name.  Coming up soon....Caleb's 2 month well visit.  I cannot wait to see how much he weighs, he's HUGE!!!

Amazing!

Three quick precious stories about Addison and how she is blowing us away lately with her memory and listening skills!!

Samson:  Since Addison was born, we have been reading a baby bible to her.  Each story is only 3-5 sentences long, which is great for short attention spans however the entire book is very long.  Before saying our prayers and going to bed, we read several stories from this bible (we read from another one when we have more time before bed, but I will talk about that in just a second).  One day while we were playing in her room and I was feeding Caleb, she pulled out the baby bible.  I heard her mumbling "Samson, Samson, Samson" as she flipped through the pages as if she was looking for something.  Then she proudly pointed her sausage finger on a page and exclaimed "Samson!!  Samson, strong.  Samson has long hair.  Samson lion"  In the story's 3-5 sentences it discussed all of those things she was declaring.  The amazing part is....we had not read that story in several days or weeks!  We were SHOCKED...I never knew whether she was really listening to all these bible stories but SHE IS; this encouraged me so much!!!  It also reaffirms how important it is to put our children in loving and godly environments because they really are soaking up everything.  I will be even MORE protective about what her little eyes and ears see and hear!

Rebecca and Abraham:  Along the same lines, we occasionally read from a Children's bible which includes longer more detailed stories.  I love this book because every story points back to Jesus at the end.  Recently, we read the story of Rebecca and Abraham.  During the story there is only one sentence that mentions Issac's name but there is a picture of the three of them.  We have read through that bible several times and we only seem to make a big deal about baby Jesus, not any of the other babies.  After recently reading about Issac I decided to point out the picture of baby Issac, but all I did was point to him as I read the one sentence with his name.  A few days later she did the same thing as with Samson---flipped to that story and named every character.

Noah:  Lastly, we have really been trying to figure out a way to conceptualize obedience to Addison.  One day when reading about Noah's ark (one of her favorites...especially the part about animals) I decided to start talking about how Noah obeyed God by building the boat and etc. etc.  So for several days she would open the Noah book and say "Noah Obeyed God".  Then one day I said "Noah obeyed God just like Addison should obey mommy and Daddy".  I sorta left it there thinking should would not even connect the two thoughts let alone what obeying means.  Sure enough, the next day she pulls out Noah's ark and says "Noah obeyed God.  Addison obey Mommy and Daddy".  Of course I gave her lots of praise!  Now I know some of you think she is just repeating what I am saying, but the milestone is remembering the word OBEY and connecting the two ideas.  We use the word OBEY a lot when we are disciplining her (both proactively and reactively), so I hope that soon she starts to understand obeying is something GOD wants and that she should do.  I maybe naive but her hearing about God extra isn't a bad thing right?

The point of those stories was to say how completely amazed I am with how much our children learn even when we do not think they are listening.  They are listening AND learning.  So fun!!!!!

Visiting Santa 2011

I am SO doing posts out of order because I am so behind!!

Visiting Santa was so fun this year!!  Addison was very excited and kept saying "Santa's Lap, I sit Santa's lap" the whole way to the mall.  When we arrived, she started blowing kisses to Santa and waving and pointing.  Addison was so exicted she could harldy stand it.  As we walked up to Santa she kept saying hi and grinned ear to ear.  NEXT, it was time to make Santa a reality---it was time to sit in his lap!  Addison FROZE when she sat on his lap; no tears, just frozen.  We snapped the picture and as soon as she came off his lap she was back to grinning and blowing kisses.  It was too funny!

Since then Addison has been talking about sitting in Santa's lap constantly.  Every Santa she sees she says "I sit in Santa lap!".  She is so funny!

Addison's Special Day

About two weeks after Caleb was born and it was just the four of us at home, we wanted to take Addison to do something special, just for her and just about her.  We wanted to reaffirm to her that she is still special and loved, especially very soon after Caleb was born.  We knew Chick-Fil-A would have to be included in Addison's Special Day because she loves to eat there, loves to dip her food, loves to play in the indoor play place and loves to "see the cows".  After thinking long and hard we decided to give build a bear a whirl.

Addison picked out a cat to make and although she was a little timid about the whole thing, she enjoyed it---especially brushing and bathing her new stuffed cat.  We named her...Joy Cat!!!  It was a fun day for all of us.  She loves picking up her cat and pressing the button in her hand to hear Daddy talk (we recorded him on it).  She grins every time she plays with it.  And we are excited to get her a few little accessories to go with the cat over the next few Christmas' and birthdays!!

Caleb Asher: One Month

I have a feeling these month birthday blogs will be horribly late now that I have two babies in my house.  But, better late than never right??  Well happy one month to Caleb on November 27!

The Stats:

• Weight:  12 pounds 10.8 oz (98%); he gained about 2.25 pounds in just over 2.5 weeks.
• Height:  22.75 inches (80%); we know this one was a little off because Caleb would NOT straighten his legs.
• Head:  15.75??  I cannot remember this one
• Diaper Size:  1 or 1-2; ready to move up to a 2
• Clothing Size:  3 Months or 3-6 Months
• Next Appointment:  2 month well visit   

The Developments:

• Routine:  We are again using the Baby Wise method so Caleb is on a 3 hour cycle of eat/play/sleep from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm.  As soon as he is comfortably and consistently sleeping through the night we will move to a 3.5 hour schedule because we have to wake him for every single feeding right now.    He has slept through the night a few times; sometimes with the help of a paci sometimes without.
• Eating:  Well, one month of breastfeeding down; I feel like everyday I continue nursing is a big accomplishment.  I would like to make it three months at least and in that time I may decide pump and bottle exclusively.  I never knew the second stint of breastfeeding would be so hard---I think its just the combination of a lazy kid and having two kids to contend with.  Although I would love to breastfeed Caleb a year like I did Addison, that may not be a realistic goal.  So, three months and then take it a day at a time after that.
• Verbal:  Caleb has just started to coo consistently.  He makes the funniest face just before a sound comes out.  he also seems to only talk when its quiet so...he may not be talking too much since Addison runs her mouth all the time :)  I hope all the grunting he does all night long turns into coos now!
• Motor Skills:  He tries so hard to roll over (back to tummy) already even though he is far from being able to do it.  He is gaining great head control but its slow and steady progress.  Caleb is funny---he will lay on his tummy with this head down and look so serious as if he is building himself up to move his head.  Then he carefully picks it up and slowly turns all the way to one side then back.  So. Carefully.  He has begun hitting at his toys when he plays on his back with his play mat.  
• Witching Hour:  The witching hour seems particularly hard for Caleb.  From the time he goes down for his late evening nap (after the 4:30 pm feeding) until he eats at 7:30 pm he drifts in and out of sleep and fusses off and on.  Addison had trouble at the same time too.  Hopefully he will get into the groove soon and start sleeping better at that nap.
• Personality:  Overall Caleb seems to be pretty laid back and honestly a little lazy.  Just like his big sister, he seems fairly content just observing the world from a far.  Caleb is most fascinated with his big sister; he cannot keep his eyes off her.  He really has a very sweet disposition

Happy Thanksgiving

For as long as I can remember, my Thanksgiving holidays have been spent in Mississippi (I affectionately refer to it as Gambrell Manor) with my Dad's extended family.  Since little Caleb Asher is only 4 weeks old, we knew flying was not the best idea so for the first time I was unable to spend the holiday with all my cousins, aunts, uncles, brother, grandmother and dad.  We did however have a memorable day thanks to my wonderful mother (and all her cooking), my husband and some dear friends.

My mom went above and beyond in cooking a fabulous meal for everyone to enjoy.  I am certain my tiny kitchen with sub-par equipment was frustrating but she persevered and the result was too delicious to describe.  I regret not getting any pictures of the spread but I was busy feeding Caleb when everyone was just digging in and I forgot.

Two very interesting events made this Thanksgiving particularly memorable:

1. The Turkey Juice Extraction:  Due to my sub-par kitchen equipment, my mother was forced to cook the turkey in a too small and too flimsy pan.  As such, when it came time to extract liquid for gravy our CREATIVE juices kicked in.  Instantly Matthew and I thought of siphoning the liquid but it was my problem solving husband that figured out HOW to make it happen.  So...Matthew took one for the team, burned some taste buds and.....siphoned the turkey juice.  It was worth it not only for the amusing video but also because the gravy was delish! 
2. The Explosion:  Just before it was time to dig in, my mother, friend Amber and I were all standing in near the stove when we heard a LOUD explosion.  In bewilderment, we all looked at each other and then looked at the oven where the sound was coming from.  We opened the oven and what to our wondering eyes should appear----A PYREX GLASS BAKEWARE dish full of dressing exploded!!!  There was dressing and glass all over the bottom of the stove!!  I have no idea what cause it but it was at least a 30 minute clean up job, not including all the time it took to keep the three little girls we had running around out of the clean up chaos.  Luckily, that was one of two dishes of dressing so we did not miss out on this traditional item.  So random though.

I am particularly thankful this year....here are just a few things I am thankful for:

• A loving and supportive husband
• Two healthy children (and a relatively easy pregnancy this year)
• A wonderful extended family who has encouraged and supported me/us throughout the pregnancy and birth of Caleb
• A mother who was willing to give up HER thanksgiving to step in and help my family (and cook thanksgiving)
• A mother in law who gave up her life for TWO weeks (including the week we had Caleb) to care for not only Addison but Matthew and I as well
• A sister in law who gladly and without hesitation found alternative childcare for her daughter since I stole her mom for 2 weeks (she watches my niece 3 days a week); I know this was no easy feat I imagine
• Friends who cooked meals for us the past several weeks (this was a bigger blessing than I can explain)
• A wonderful school for Addison filled with loving teachers
• Our home
• Matthew's job
• ....And so much more

Caleb Asher: 2 Weeks

Today Caleb had his two week well baby visit and I am not sure why, but I was so surprised by the stats.  I don't think I have enough confidence in my mothering abilities or something.  I get nervous every time one of my kids has a check up because I always think it will reveal something I have done wrong!  Maybe NOW I will have confidence :)

The Stats:

• Weight:  10 lbs 5 oz (91%); I guess I can stop worrying about how FAST he eats now because clearly he is getting enough
• Height:  22 inches (91%)
• Head:  14.5 cm???  (46%); this is the biggest difference between Addison and Caleb.  Addison has always been in the 90's percentiles with her head---maybe we wont have trouble fitting things over Caleb's head like we do hers!!

Other Fun Facts:

• Routine:  He is on a 7:30 am to 7:30 pm schedule right now where he cycles through EAT/PLAY/SLEEP every three hours until the 7:30 pm feeding when he goes down for the night.  We wake him at 11 PM and then allow him to on demand feed throughout the night.  He usually only wakes up one time between the 11 PM feeding and the 7:30 am feeding.
• General Personality:  I would liken him to his big sister; pretty laid back so far.  I know this is subject to change.
• Eating:  He is a MUCH faster eater than Addison---I hope this doesn't mean he will take a long time to sleep through the night :)  He never seems hungry when its time to feed him, but we do it anyways.  Once he sleeps through the night consistently THEN we can think about stretching the time between day time feedings.  
• Developments:  He tries so hard to lift his head and does really well already!!!  He has rolled to his side a few times too.  He's still not awake very long yet, so there is not too much to report on the development front yet.
• Congestion:  Caleb has been congested since he was born.  Today the doctor said babies born in this area at this time of year tend to have congestion issues right off the bat.  Its scary sometimes when he gets all choked up from the drainage, it is so sad.  As a side note, Addison has had a stuffy nose since we brought Caleb home from the hospital---it snowed that day.  So I attribute it to the weather change; the doctor agreed.  Addison's seems to be getting worse so we may end up at the doctor soon.  LOTS of saline nasal drops are going on around this house!

We love Caleb so much already, he is such a sweet little boy.  Big sister sure loves him too, but is having some difficulties adjusting.  I know this is temporary but when you are living it, it sure seems permanent.  I will do a post on Addison soon----hopefully :)  Ya know, in all my spare time

...CALEB ASHER GRANT to the Grant Gang!!

The Stats:

• Birthday:  October 27, 2011
• Weight:  9 lbs. 6.7 oz
• Height:  21.25 inches
• Time of Birth:  8:55 PM
• Apgar Score:  9

The Story:

October 27 was quite a crazy day even though we all thought the induction would take a long time---boy were we wrong.

• 5:15 AM:  Headed to the hospital...after stopping for some dunkin donuts :)  I enjoyed one last fun lil breakfast with my love, Matthew
• 6:00 AM:  Arrive at hospital; we had to wait to be checked in because they were short on nurses, yikes!
• 8:00 AM:  Got into room and waited for the midwife to give us our plan
• 9:00 AM:  First exam revealed I made no progress since the office visit 3 days before.  3 cm dilated and 60% effaced.  She decided petocin was the only way, I doubted my ability to go epidural free right away.  We started off slow since the plan was to hold off on epidural as long as possible.  The midwife just KNEW she would deliver our baby since it was my second one AND the first one was so big; she was convinced it would be fast!
• 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM:  Upped the petocin every 15-30 minutes.  Very minimal pain to me.
• 2:45 PM:  Exam revealed little progress--3-4 cm dilated, 75% effaced and -2 station.  She decided to break my water (which was SO weird by the way---my water never broke with Addison because her head blocked everything).  
• 4:30PM:  Exam revealed little progress again--4 cm, 80% effaced, -1 station.  We realized we maybe in for another all nighter.  Knowing that and knowing I was already a generally more tired person than when we had Addison (chasing a young toddler will do that to you) we started to consider an epidural.  The pain is manageable but---contractions were finally getting intense.

***Here is where it gets interesting, but a bit graphic.  Stop reading if you don't want to be grossed out**

• 6:00PM:  Although they did not check me yet, I asked for the epidural.  It was ALL back labor and I knew I could not endure it all night AND push.  I realize now----I was in transition, the most painful part of labor.  At the time, I did not think we had gotten to that part yet so I THOUGHT the worst was yet to come.
• 7:00PM:  When the anesthesiologist arrived I complaining that I thought I needed to GO to the bathroom (and not pee).  I mentioned it several times but they all kinda ignored me so we did not push it.  THEY DID NOT CHECK MY PROGRESS.  As soon as the epidural was in, Matthew ran down the street to get us a movie from Red Box since we were assured nothing was progressing fast.
• 8:00PMish:  For those of you who do not know, when you have an epidural you have a catheter in place, but that is just for urine.  So I asked the nurse could you do the other bathroom with an Epidural in and not know it.  She laughed and said no, then she went about her business.  Matthew returned with a movie and I told him I REALLY need to go to the bathroom.  When the nurse returned I complained again about it.....so.....she checked and I had gone.  She was puzzled since this never happened to her before.  Scratching her head she decided to check me.....HE WAS CROWNING!!!!!!!!
• 8:15PM:  Nurse said not to move since they were worried he would come right out on his own.  The midwife JUST came on the floor and happen to check in on us first, good thing!!
• 8:45PM:  Start pushing.....5 pushes later.......
• 8:55PM:  Matthew says "IT'S A BOY!!!!!" and gives me a high five :)

Caleb had a little trouble clearing his lungs since he came out so fast, so he was VERY blue for a while when he came out; they had to suction him.  After the suction, he was fine!

All in all it was a great experience.  In the end, the nurse and midwife agreed, I was actually probably ready to push at the time I got the epidural.  Oh well, he probably came out faster with the epidural in.  And did I mention how ridiculous I am for worrying about his size???  Just goes to show, it's a guessing game.

We love our little Manna from Heaven, Caleb Asher and big sister does too.  We anticipate the first few months to be challenging with two children so young, but in a few months routines will even out and we will all learn how to be a family of four.  Please continue to pray for us as we make this transition over the coming weeks and months.  Please remember Addison specifically as you pray, she is still a baby herself and this is an emotional time for her.  So far, the tears have been minimal thanks to my wonderful, compassionate  understanding, loving and patient husband.  His mother is also here helping and let's just say I know where Matthew gets all the qualities I just listed.  I am so grateful.

41 Weeks, Induction Day

I am back tracking a bit here so that we can compare the tummies at the time of induction.  Manna's birth story is coming up next!

Manna 41 Weeks

Blessing 41 Weeks, 4 days

40 Weeks, 4 days

We went to our final prenatal appointment today.  Below is the summary.

• BP:  112/64 high for me
• Fetal Heart Rate:  124
• Fundal Height:  No significant changes
• Progress:  No progress since last appointment
• Next Steps:  Midwife stripped my membranes, not painful for me--guess I am lucky.  That may or may not help move labor along, but we are hopeful it will.  I have felt only slightly different since then but that could be the placebo effect at work :)  The midwife also feels like it will not take a whole lot of help to get this baby going if we do get induced.
• INDUCTION DAY:  Induction is set for Thursday, October 27 at 6 AM.  This is the LAST day they would let us go :)

Whether Manna is induced Thursday or comes on his.own----we get to meet Manna THIS WEEK!!!  We cannot wait to meet Manna, name Manna, know Manna's gender see Addison as a big sister, swaddle up Manna and be a family of four!!!  I cannot believe the pregnancy is almost over...sniff, sniff.  I will miss being pregnant :)

We appreciate your prayers this week and particularly on Thursday.  We will post an update here and plan to send an announcement email, but I am CERTAIN we will inadvertently leave someone off.

It's D-Day!

Well today is D-day and I have a feeling Manna is in no hurry! Below are the comparison profile shots (40 weeks and 41 weeks); I think the tummy size is pretty similar but Manna looks lower to me!

Since about May or June we followed the same general routine for Addison and that was the first time I put it on paper. So the last routine was geared for about 12-18 months. I loved having it on paper because it helped me problem solve when things were chaos, helped me accomplish a lot more of our goals (blanket time, errands, etc.). I blogged about it (New Routine, The Wise Series Way) and gave ALLLL this disclaimers about still being flexible and such. What's interesting is I have actually felt MORE free since we put the routine on paper! So it made sense why I have felt so chaotic since we dropped the morning nap in late September---I had no revised routine!!!

Below is the new Addison norm beginning about 18 months. This will change soon based on how we integrate Manna into the routine. Most of the components of Addison's day will stay the same, the timing will just be altered to allow me time to nurse or nap the new baby. Sibling time will be added soon too, YAY!!!
